You Were Never Too Much: I See You

For some of us, being seen can feel surprisingly vulnerable. Somewhere along the way, we learned to associate attention with criticism, judgment, rejection, or humiliation, so we began hiding the parts of ourselves that once felt natural and free. We became careful with our words, our confidence, our emotions, our bodies, and even our happiness. This meditation is an invitation to go back to the younger version of yourself who learned those rules and offer that younger self something they may have needed all along: a safe place to be fully themselves, without fear of being punished for being seen.

When Being Seen Didn't Feel Safe

Breathe it out.

And I invite you to close your eyes, find a relaxed position, and take a deep breath in.

And breathe it out.

Again, take a deep breath in.

And breathe it out.

Meet Your Inner Child

Now I invite you to envision your inner child, a younger version of you, somewhere between the ages of five and eighteen, who learned that being seen meant criticism, judgment, rejection, humiliation, or attack.

See them clearly.

See their face.

See where they are.

And now I want you to talk to your inner child.

You can repeat after me, or you can substitute words that feel right for you.

You learned in childhood that being seen meant you were about to be criticized, judged, rejected, humiliated, or attacked.

You learned that from the people around you who were supposed to love you, protect you, and help you feel safe.

You may have learned this from your mother or your father.

You may have learned it from a sibling, a teacher, a relative, or someone who had power over you.

And because of what happened, you learned to become smaller.

You learned to hide parts of yourself.

You learned to be careful about what you said.

You learned to think twice before you allowed yourself to be confident, expressive, emotional, beautiful, successful, loud, playful, or fully yourself.

You learned that being seen could hurt.

You Were Trying to Protect Yourself

And I want you to know something now.

It makes sense that you think and feel this way.

Your body learned this for a reason.

Your younger self was trying to protect you with the information she had.

But you are not that little child anymore.

You are here now.

And I am going to take care of you now.

Not them. Me.

I want you to know that you never deserved to be criticized, judged, humiliated, rejected, or attacked for being yourself.

You never deserved to be made to feel small.

You never deserved to feel ashamed of who you were.

You never deserved to believe that there was something wrong with you.

The people who treated you that way were acting from their own wounds, their own conditioning, their own limitations, and the things they had learned themselves.

That belongs to them.

It does not belong to you.

Their words do not define you.

Their judgment does not define you.

Their inability to see your worth does not determine your worth.

You are not what happened to you.

And I am here now.

I am here to protect you.

I am here to stand up for you.

I am here to keep you safe.

You don't have to protect yourself alone anymore.

Take a breath.

Protect the Child You Once Were

Now I want you to envision yourself as the adult you are today.

See yourself walking into the memory.

You are walking toward your younger self.

You see exactly what is happening.

You see the person who is criticizing them, judging them, attacking them, humiliating them, or making them feel small.

And this time, you step in.

You stand directly between them.

Your younger self is behind you.

You are protecting them.

And now turn toward the person who is hurting your inner child.

Look at them.

And say:

You are not allowed to do this to them anymore.

They don't deserve this.

You don't get to speak to them that way anymore.

You don't get to make them feel ashamed of themselves anymore.

You don't get to make them feel small anymore.

You don't get to decide who they are.

You don't get to teach them to hate themselves.

You don't get to take their confidence away from them.

You don't get to make them afraid of being seen.

And now say whatever else you need to say.

You can be angry.

You can be firm.

You can tell this person to leave.

You can tell them they no longer have access to your younger child.

You can tell them:

Get away from them.

You are finished here.

You no longer have power over them.

Take a breath.

And then turn back toward your younger self.

Reach out your hand.

Take their hand.

And tell them:

Come with me.

I'm taking you somewhere safe.

Create a Safe Place for Your Inner Child

Now imagine walking away together.

You are leaving that room.

You are leaving that house.

You are leaving that environment.

You are leaving the place where they learned that being seen was dangerous.

And you are taking them somewhere completely different.

I want you to imagine a safe house that you build specifically for your younger self.

This is their house.

You decide what it looks like.

You decide where it is.

You decide what is inside.

Fill it with their favorite things.

Their favorite colors.

Their favorite foods.

Their favorite music.

Their favorite books.

Their favorite toys.

Their favorite clothes.

Their favorite places.

Put everything inside that makes them feel comfortable, peaceful, playful, and completely themselves.

There are no rules here about who they are allowed to be.

There is no criticism here.

There is no judgment here.

There is no one here who gets to make them feel small.

They are safe here now.

Let Yourself Be Seen

And now I want you to practice something with your younger self.

I want you to let them be seen.

Let them do the very thing they once learned was unsafe.

Maybe they want to dance.

Let them dance.

Maybe they want to sing.

Let them sing.

Maybe they want to dress up.

Let them dress up.

Maybe they want to look in the mirror.

Let them look.

Maybe they want to speak loudly.

Let them speak.

Maybe they want to create something.

Let them create.

Maybe they want to be beautiful.

Let them be beautiful.

Maybe they want to be silly.

Let them be silly.

Maybe they want to tell you exactly what they think.

Let them speak.

And you stay there.

You watch them.

You see them.

You don't criticize them.

You don't correct them.

You don't tell them to calm down.

You don't ask them to be less.

You simply let them exist exactly as they are.

I See You

And say:

I see you.

I love seeing you.

You don't have to hide from me.

You don't have to make yourself smaller for me.

You don't have to earn my approval.

You don't have to be perfect for me to love you.

You can be completely yourself here.

You are safe here.

Take a deep breath.

And notice what it feels like to watch your younger self being seen without being punished for it.

Let that experience settle into your body.

Create New Rules for Yourself

This is what you are teaching yourself now.

Being seen can feel different.

Being seen can be safe.

Being seen can be witnessed with love.

Being seen does not automatically mean criticism.

It does not automatically mean rejection.

It does not automatically mean attack.

You have the ability to choose who gets to see you now.

You have the ability to choose who gets access to you.

And you have the ability to leave when someone makes you feel small.

Your younger self does not have to live by the rules of the people who hurt them.

You get to create new rules now.

I am allowed to be seen.

I am allowed to take up space.

I am allowed to love myself.

I am allowed to express myself.

I am allowed to be confident.

I am allowed to be fully myself.

You Are Safe With You

And when you are ready, walk over to your younger self.

Give them a big hug.

Hold them.

And tell them:

I have you now.

I am here.

I will protect you.

I will listen to you.

I will stand up for you.

You never have to face them alone again.

Take one more deep breath.

And breathe it out.

Feel your body.

Feel your feet.

Feel the surface underneath you.

Notice the room around you.

And when you are ready, gently open your eyes.

Come back to your body.

Come back to the room.

And remember:

You are allowed to be seen.
